The Living Scent
On the History, Science, and Practice of Fragrance Layering
Fragrance layering is not new. It has been practised across cultures for at least five thousand years, from the incense ceremonies of ancient Mesopotamia to the attar traditions of Mughal India and the kodo rituals of Japan.
What is new is designing a fragrance from the ground up as two layers of one scent, rather than pairing two standalone fragrances after the fact.
The Living Scent traces this history, examines the neuroscience of how our brains process layered scent, and explores why the format matters. It draws on peer-reviewed research (including the Nobel Prize-winning work of Buck and Axel on olfactory receptors), primary historical sources, and the practical experience of creating Prem Rouge with master perfumers Patty Canac and Clémentine Humeau.

Arpit Kaushik is the founder of Dilli House. With a background as both an engineer and a published poet, his work explores the intersection of neuroscience, the senses, and human emotion. This multidisciplinary approach, rooted in systems thinking, led to the creation of Prem Rouge as a fully integrated fragrance system.
He developed the foundational brief and finalised the formulae for Prem Rouge alongside master perfumers Patty Canac and Clémentine Humeau. He recently presented "The Scent of a Memory" at Somerset House Exchange and is currently developing the Aromatic Emotion Wheel, a framework mapping scent to psychological and emotional states.
His first poetry collection, What We Say Is Home, follows work published in numerous literary magazines. His translation of Goethe's "Ginkgo biloba" and his original bilingual poem, "Prem Rouge", are featured in the Dilli House Gentle Moments Guide.
