How We Reimagined Perfume Part 2: The Approach
In Part 1 of our series, we explored how Prem Rouge reimagines the perfume bottle itself. Now, let's look at how we approached the broader aspects of creating a fragrance—from packaging philosophy to ingredient selection.
Packaging With Purpose
The excess in perfume packaging has become an industry standard—boxes within boxes, ribbons, tissue paper, and decorative bags, most destined for the bin within minutes of purchase. This excess creates a fleeting moment of luxury that quickly becomes waste.
We chose a different path for Prem Rouge, embracing minimal packaging that balances protection and presentation. Our innovative mushroom-based inserts are fully compostable, ensuring that even the protective elements of our packaging return to the earth without harm. We believe true luxury isn't found in excess but in essence—quality that speaks for itself without needing layers of adornment.
Inverting the Investment
A less discussed aspect of perfumery is the allocation of resources. For many brands, only about 20% of what consumers pay goes into creating the actual fragrance, with the majority allocated to marketing, celebrities, and advertising campaigns.
At Dilli House, we've intentionally inverted this ratio. The majority of our resources go into sourcing the finest natural ingredients and developing our innovative water-based formula. We spend less telling you how good Prem Rouge is and more ensuring it actually delivers an exceptional experience. After all, quality speaks for itself when a fragrance meets your skin.
The Natural Question
"Natural" has become perhaps the most overused word in the beauty industry, yet a walk through any fragrance department tells a different story. Despite premium price tags, many fragrances rely heavily on synthetic molecules.
Prem Rouge uses 100% natural ingredients—essential oils, absolutes, and plant-derived isolates. This choice isn't simply about following trends; it's about returning to perfumery's roots and creating fragrances with authentic character. These natural ingredients tell real stories, carrying memories of the places they're grown, the hands that harvested them, and the traditions that refined them.
The decision to use natural ingredients exclusively comes with challenges. Natural ingredients are more variable, more complex to work with, and often more costly. But they also bring a depth and authenticity that synthetic alternatives cannot match. A fragrance should do more than smell good—it should be good, both in composition and impact.
A Different Philosophy
Creating Prem Rouge wasn't just about making a perfume. It was about questioning the assumptions that have guided the industry for decades and asking whether a different approach might better align with contemporary values.
This philosophy doesn't suggest that traditional perfumery lacks value—indeed, there is tremendous artistry and heritage worth preserving. Rather, it proposes that alongside tradition, there is room for new thinking, for approaches that respond to evolving consumer priorities around sustainability, naturalness, and meaningful consumption.
In the final part of our series, we'll explore how Prem Rouge reimagines the experience of wearing perfume—from the intimate relationship it creates to the patience it rewards.
